Due to the geographical location, the south-eastern and south-western part of India and southern part of Bangladesh have always been the victim of cyclone and other natural calamities. The recent hit of super cyclone Amphan has left a trail of severe destruction in coastal areas, claiming over 20 lives in Bangladesh and 72 in India.
Basically, a cyclone is formed when warm and moist air on the sea/ocean surface rises upward, resulting in low pressure, and cool air moves to create a balance. Consequently, this cool air also becomes warm and goes upward. Finally, the air of this region starts spinning, which, in the long run, forms a cyclone.
The natural embankment, called Sundarbans, has also contributed to lessen the impact of the super cyclone that swept over Satkhira, Bagerhat, Patuakhali and some other 15 districts. A massive destruction was seen. While damaging wroth TK 1100 crore, this cyclone damaged 6 kilometers of embankment in Bhola district, inundated 1,80,500 hatcheries, damaged mangoes worth approximately TK 140 crore, 1100 kilometers road and over 200 bridges and culverts.
The blow actually came when Bangladesh has been fighting COVID 19 which has already infected over 75000 people and claimed over 1000 lives. Although precautionary measures were undertaken by evacuating the region, experts were suspecting the community transmission of this deadly disease in the sheltering places. A massive damage is reported as mangoes in this region have fallen off the trees. Moreover, a gusty wind occurred in other parts of the country, resulting disrupted power supply. Telecommunication system will suffer a lot given that 60% of towers were badly affected because of its strike.
Finally, southern region of our country always experiences such natural calamities as summer returns. Experts also mark deforestation, and emission of carbon, destroying ozone layer, unplanned urbanization etc as the reasons for such calamity. These activities should be monitored with proper vigilance to minimize the impact, and application of modern technology is required to reduce economic damage.
